B-Side Recording

Hello,

Over the past few weeks we've been preparing the release of our debut album Life Stream. This includes things like sorting out press, radio pluggers, tours, music videos and launch parties. In amongst all of that, we've been recording a b-side to go with the first single Finders Keepers, to be released June 14th.

We've been recording it in our drummer Jamie's lovely new analogue studio:

First we had to spend a bit of time working on a guide track because the song has the odd extra bar and speeds up. After we'd done that Jamie working his magic on the drums:

Then Ad came in to do bass:

The following day it was time for me to do my shredding:

Then I did some vocals:

Sadly we forgot to take photos of the other exciting things like Harmonium, Ukulele, Electric Guitar, Glockenspiel and Electric Piano. I think we got too carried away with experimental mic techniques. Sorry.

And we're done! Tracklaying is all finished, now we just have to mix and master it. Next up, Jamie is remixing Finders Keepers and we're heading back into the studio where we recording Life Stream to make a radio edit. We're also rehearsing lots ahead of our tour in May.

Summer Solstice news

We thought it'd be nice to give you an update on our new single Summer Solstice. First of all, we'd like to say thank you to everyone who came to our launch party at the Deaf Institute. We had a great night and I hope you did too! We recorded our set so hopefully we'll be able to share it with you soon.

We'd also like to thank those of you who came to our Summer Solstice tour. It was our first time on the road with our new drummer Jamie. We had lots of fun. Proof:

Earlier this week I got on the train to Newport in South Wales to set about hand-making the packaging for our next single, Summer Solstice. To make our task slightly easier, we decided to get the back covers done at the printers. They were finished last week, so I took them with me to finish them off. Here's a little bit more info:

The printing was done in two colours, which meant we had to do two screens. We started off by mixing the colour for the grass:

Then we set about making the screens. First of all we had to clean them:

And then apply some special stuff to stop the paint from going where it shouldn't. Sorry for my lack of technical know-how.

Then we put the canvas on a special UV lighting machine, with the stencil on top. This dries the paint everywhere except where the stencil blocks the UV light.

Then we washed off the paint to reveal the stencil:

Then we put the canvas onto the printing press and applied the paint:

Then we used a special scraper (forgotten their proper name)to pull the paint over the screen. The paint seeps through the gaps.

And creates this:

Then we set about repeating this process. We had to do it 520 times, just in case we messed up a few by pressing too hard and smudging the paint or something. Good job, because it took us a while to get into the swing of things.

Some time later:

We averaged about 100 sheets an hour, so as you can imagine it was a pretty
long process. Once we'd got all of it done we set about adding the second colour to complete the image:

We made the screen again and spent a long time lining up the print to make sure it lined up correctly. Then it was back to the printing:

Two days and 1040 prints later...

Woo! After we all packed up I got back on the train and went home to North Wales. The following day I set about numbering and signing all of the copies:

They're all done now, and have been sent back to the label to be packaged up with the vinyl in a plastic sleeve. We're really pleased with how they've turned out, so I hope you like it when it's all done!

Put Your Slippers On Tour Blog

We're back from our first ever headline tour!

Our 2000 mile journey started with a trip to Bush Hall in London. The venue was amazing:

They also had the biggest kettle in the world:

We then drove to Luton to stay at a friend's house for the night. The next day we went to Leeds to play at Royal Park Cellars.

After the show we went to stay at the Rosie Taylor Project's house. The following morning I went to a park for a walk and met a guy called G-Dawg with a gold tooth. I was a bit scared. Once I got back from my walk we got back on the M1 and drove up to Edinburgh to play at Cabaret Voltaire.

We ended up playing at one of their club nights, going on stage at 12. We were rather apprehensive about it, but it turned out to be really great. People were dancing to our music! Not something we thought we'd ever see...

Long story, but we ended up having to drive back to North Wales after we played. I drove through the night, and we got back at 6.30 in the morning. Hardcore! We then had a couple of days in the studio before heading down to Bristol to play at Start the Bus.

Two people were dancing at the front again! Maybe we've gone dancier since our last tour...

The following day we drove back to London to record an XFM session for John Kennedy. We were wrongly directed down to the basement to park and ended up getting stuck!

We were locked in, but thankfully I had the number for XFM in my phone so I could get someone to move the car that was blocking the exit. After the kerfuffle we got to work:

We were done by around 5, so we had the rest of the evening to have fun in Luton at our friend's house. We played Frustration, Top Trumps and cards.

The next day we went to another park in Luton. It was fun.

Then we decided to have a business meeting:

After the fun we headed back down to London to play at a small intimate venue called Monkey Chews.

We then went to stay with Inigo, who is the drummer in Klaus Says Buy the Record. He has a lovely house and studio near Tunbridge Wells. He has sheep!

And a parrot! He told me he loved me. Aww.

Next up was a show in Brighton at Talking Heads. A definite highlight of the the tour.

We spent another night in Tunbridge before going to Southampton to play at Talking Heads.

After soundcheck we met up with our good friend Luke Leighfield to go for dinner. It was Ad's birthday so we decided to go for a proper meal. By complete chance we ended up going to place where you could eat for free if it was your birthday! A full three courses, too.

We stayed over at Luke's, and then made our way home for a couple of days. Becca and I went over to Spain to visit my brother during our time off. It was amazing I did my best to promote T&S while I was there...

When I got back we had our last two gigs of the tour. The first one was back down in London to play a Local night at The King's Head in Crouch End. We played with Dan Michaelson and the Coastguards, who are a super group made up of members of Absentee, Ed Harcourt, Magic Numbers, Rumblestrips and Fields. It was ace. Really busy, too.

After yet another night sleeping in Luton we made our way up to Birmigham to play at St Paul's. It was the launch night for the new EP by Mr Bones and the Dreamers, and we played at this lovely venue:

We like churches. It was another busy one, and proved to be a nice ending to our tour.

Thank you to everyone who came to see us, we had a great time. Hopefully we'll be out on tour again at the end of June, so hopefully we'll see you again then!

In other news, yesterday I finished off a remix for The Answering Machine's next single Obviously Cold. Hopefully I'll be able to show it to you soon.

Tim and Sam's new HQ

Hello,

We've been busy beavering away behind the scenes so we thought it'd be nice to let you know what's been going on. Here's a bit of background info:

We've been rehearsing and recording demos in the spare room of my house since we formed. You can see what it looks like here:

As you can see it's a bit of a squeeze!

We recently decided to try and get a bit more room. The plan is to move to the upstairs of my house. This involves converting two bedrooms and a hallway into one big room! Pretty exciting.

As we're on a pretty tight budget, I've done most of the work myself. This first thing I had to do was remove all the doors, and then we made a start on demolishing the stud walls.

It took three days to remove all of the doors, walls and carpet. This is what remains:

Despite my obvious man skills, we've got to wait for the builders to come in now. They're going to remove the supporting wall and replace it with wooden post. They're also going to sort out the electrics and do some plastering.

Once that's done I'll update the blog with more developments. Hopefully by the end of it the room will be big enough to start filming some of our rehearsals and things like that.

Tim and Sam's Mini-Adventure

Hello,

This week we've been away on our travels to London, Brighton and Canterbury.

On Tuesday we set off to London for the first night of our residency. For those of you who don't know, we've organised four shows at The Big Chill House, near Kings Cross station in London. The purpose behind these shows was to test out some of our new material, whilst at the same time asking some of our favourite bands to play with us. The original plan was to start them on February 3rd, but the snow came down so we had to cancel the first one.

So, we left the T&S North Wales HQ at around 11. Highlights of the journey included passing the 133333 mile mark on my car, and some drink driving:

The night started with Wise Children, who we've been myspace friends with for quite a while. They were a few members down tonight, but it was great to finally see them play. They make lovely acoustic music.

Then came Babel, who are a Bristol based folk rock band. They were amazing. Make sure you go and get their new album.

After a healthy bout of merch selling we packed up our car and headed to Luton to stay with a friend.

The following day we set off nice and early to Brighton. The first thing we did was went for a round of mini-golf. This is becoming a bit of a tradition. Fordy won, with Adam and I just a single point behind.

Golf is thirsty work. We decided that now would be a good time to go a drink. We found a lovely tea shop.

After our tea we went to the Hope for our gig. We didn't get two encores this time, but it was a good gig nonetheless. We like Brighton.

On to the final date of our mini-tour. We decided to make another early start to explore Canterbury. People there are tiny.

And they must have one leg shorter than the other:

We started to get thirsty again. We found this aptly named shop:

The tea room is also the most haunted place in Canterbury. Scary.

We did a bit more exploring and then went to the venue. We were pleasantly surprised to find a baby grand on stage! We decided that we'd like to take one on tour with us someday. Practical.

The gig went well again. We got a 45 minute set! We're so used to play for half an hour, it felt good to play an extra few songs.

EP re-release/ Single

Thank you to everyone who has ordered the Put Your Slippers On EP; we hope you have been enjoying it. We have been overwhelmed by the response we've had. So much so, in fact, that we've been asked to re-release the EP. It will be released on 13th April through Full of Joy Records (don't worry though, copies will still be sold before then). This time, the release will be accompanied by national press and a comprehensive tour of the UK. A full list of dates will be announced very soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

13th April will also see further distribution of the EP in the digital world. It will be available to download of eMusic, Amazon, Napster etc.

Then, in June, we'll be releasing a brand new single! We've been busy recording b-sides for it this month. It's all sounding lovely, and we've got a big surprise in store for you. We will fill you in on all the details in the not too distant future.

Here's a summary of our year. It includes a break down of Tim and Sam's year, and lists of our favourite albums and gigs. There's also the odd picture, too. Enjoy!

T&S highlights:

January - We made our TV debut! on 31st Jan we recorded a session for Channel M. It was the windiest day ever and we got blown away when we were carrying our stuff into the studio. It was great fun though.

February - Started our first tour of the year. We played 10 dates starting at the end of Feb. We travelled all over the UK and had lots of fun. There is a blog up on Myspace if you'd like to read more about it.

March - We finished our tour and then we started our epic recording session. This month, we mainly focused on recording drums for all of the songs.

April - More recording. We ended up recording 19 songs. 7 of them are on our EP, which is out now. The rest should be released as an album next year. How exciting. We also played a few great gigs, including Huw Stephen's Introducing night at The Social, and a show with Shady Bard and Polytechnic. Both of whom are ace.

Hello,

May - A fun month. We played at The Great Escape Festival, which turned out to be one of our favourite gigs so far. I also got a new car. This was exciting because we could now travel in one vehicle to all of our gigs.

June - We locked ourselves away to get a move on with our recording. We also did a lot of rehearsing, so we could play all of these songs live.

July - Latitude Festival! This was lots of fun. Thank you very much to Huw Stephens for asking us to play.

August - Our second tour of the year. This time slightly longer, playing at a number of small but lovely festivals.

September - We set up Full of Joy Records in September, and set about work on releasing our EP. This was a really big learning curve for all of us. We also recorded the live video for House by the Sea, which you can watch on Youtube here:

October - A small number of gigs in between doing the PR for our EP. This involved lots of promo CDs and lots of envelopes.

November - We released our EP! Our first proper CD. Something we'd been looking forward to having for a long time. We also had an amazing launch party at the Sacred Trinity Church in Salford.

December - Our first in-store at Purgroove in London. We also did as session for Tom Robinson on BBC 6Music, which was amazing.

Some lists. All are in no particular order:

Favourite T&S gigs of the year:

27th Nov - EP Launch Party - Sacred Trinity Church, Salford. A really special night in a fantastic venue. Couldn't have wished for a better way to celebrate our EP launch.

28th March - St Peter's Church, Kingston - It took us 8 hours to get there. We turned up and went straight on stage, and we didn't get home until 5 in the morning. Despite this, we were still in the studio for 9 the following day. Hardcore. Anyway, the gig itself was great.

4th May - Sounds from the Other City Festival, Salford - Great festival. We played in a pub that was completely packed to the rafters.

16th May - Great Escape Festival - Our first larger festival. We were expecting to play to an empty room, but instead we got a full one. Better still, they were all quite and appreciative.

20th July - Latitude Festival - Easily the biggest gig we've done so far. Our second set in the woods was equally as good too. Definitely something we'll always remember.

4th Nov - Tommy's Bar, Cardiff - Dwi'n hoffi Caerdydd! We played with The Kabedees, who all bought T&S T-Shirts and wore them on stage. For this, we love them forever.

21st Dec - Wirksworth Town Hall, Wirksworth - A small town in the middle of no-where, but it turned out to be the perfect final gig of the year.

Non T&S gigs of the year:

Radiohead - Manchester LCCG. Probably our collective all-time favourite band.
David Bazan - Night n Day, Manchester. What a voice.
Bon Iver - The Great Escape Festival. We were all really impressed. Great show.
Okkervil River - The Great Escape Festival. Amazing live band.
Adem - Brudenell Social Club. With his band. One of our collective favourite solo artists.
Elbow - Delemer Forest. Elbow in a forest. What more could you want? Great that they've done so well this year, too.

New Video!

Hello,

Below is a live version of our song "House by the Sea". It was a bit of an experiment. We used a bunch of old cameras and carefully set them up so we could film it whilst playing the song, and then we took the footage home to edit it ourselves. Don't expect a super pro video, but we think it's a charming representation of one of our live songs. Enjoy!

There have been some big developments in the Tim and Sam camp this week. Here's the news:

Tim and Sam’s Summer Tour Round-Up!

Hello,

A massive blog for you. We're back from our summer tour! We travelled 2500 miles over 17 days and had lots of fun along the way.

Our adventure started on July 30th when we drove from the T&S North Wales HQ to Guildford. We played at a lovely seated venue called The Boileroom.

Beforehand we had noodles. They were tasty.

After our spell-binding set we headed to Luke Leighfield's house in Southampton to get some beauty sleep.

The following morning we headed into Southampton to have an explore. We found a snooker place but they tried to charge us £22 for two hours (!). We decided to drown our sorrows in a nearby tea shop.

After our tea we made our way back to Luke's house to have some fun. We didn't have a gig to play that night so made the most of it by watching a film and by having a manly press-up competition (I think we did about 5 each). Rock on.

We rose nice and early the next day and made our way to Plymouth. This was pretty exciting because it was the first of 8 gigs we were doing with the super amazing Klaus Says Buy the Record. We also got to meet the wonder that is Paul Turner, who was travelling with us on tour.

Before that, though, we had more tea.

After our tea we headed to the venue and played the hits. The gig was pretty fun. We got our faces melted by the wonder of Klaus.

Another day came and we made our way to Cornwall! After a few wrong turns, we arrived at the Leopalooza Festival near Bude.

After our set we left the site to give ourselves a rare treat. A real dinner! We splashed out on a pub dinner before making our way back to the site to see the lovely Luke Leighfield, who would be playing with us for the rest of the tour.

After Luke's set we found out that our sleeping arrangements had fallen through, which meant we had to sleep in our car! We had to squeeze all of our equipment and 4 people in our VW Passat for the night.

Feeling less than refreshed, we woke up and made our way to Truro to play at the Gig on the Green Festival.

After that we made our way to the second stage to watch Ice-Cold Idiots. This band had a combined age of 33! They played some original songs, as well as classics like Song 2 and Teenage Kicks. What more could you want?

We then made our way to our stage and set up. It was fun, despite the massive downpour that went on throughout our sets.

Once we packed up we made our way into Truro for some dinner. And another group photo.

After that we made our way to our free hotel(!). This was probably the most exciting thing ever.

We had an amazing sleep, which more than made up for the night before. We even got free breakfast! Yum.

After our morning feast we travelled to Exeter. We had some more tea. And cake!

After our tea-dosage we went to the venue to do our thing.

After the gig we drove through the night to Luke's house in Southampton for some sleep.

The next day we made our way to Kingston. Before we went to the venue we stopped off at Banquet Records to admire their excellent CD selection.

Yummy.

After our set we drove back to Southampton again. This time because we had to help Luke with his photo shoot. This involved lifting pianos and sitting in the back of vans like the real men we are.

We followed Luke and his piano to The New Forest near Southampton, and then to Bournemouth beach.

After our manly work was done, we drove to Southend-On-Sea for the next gig. We got there just in time to enjoy the rides opposite the venue. Yeah!

After the gig we drove to Inigo's house/ studio for the night. It was amazing.

They even had a parrot! Yeah!

Next up was Brighton. We decided to get there reasonably early and have fun in Brighton. Those of you who have read our tour blogs before may remember that last time we were in Brighton we played mini-golf, where Fordy beat me in a sudden death after we were tied after 18 holes. We decided to have a rematch. This time I won! Yeah!

To celebrate my victory, we decided to go for fish and chips before we went to the venue.

The Brighton gig was a special one because Massimo joined us on stage. Although Massimo has played with us a few times before, we haven't seen him for a few months so it was nice to have him back.

After the gig we went to my Uncle's house near Lewes to sleep for the night. We love staying at my Uncle's house because he has a swimming pool! Despite the fact that it was freezing outside, Fordy and I manned it up and went for a dip. Check out our comedy diving poses.

After our dip we got dressed and made our way into Lewes to celebrate Becca's birthday. We went to a place called Bill's for lunch. It was amazing.

After our feast we drove to Portsmouth to play our first ever BBQ! It was Paul Turner's private birthday BBQ. We played a special acoustic set under a marquee.

This was a bit of a sad day too as it was the last of our gigs with Klaus Says Buy the Record. Sob.

We waved goodbye to Jon, Inigo and Paul and made our way to Leeds to play with Gossamer Albatross at the Packhorse. This gig turned out to be lots of fun because the audience were super quiet and attentive.

After our set we dropped Kathryn off at the train station. She had to go home to move her things to her new Uni house in Edinburgh.

The next day we drove to play another outdoor gig at the Belper Summer Alldayer.

Always wear sun cream.

After our spell-binding sets we drove into Belper to get ourselves a Chinese.

The next day we drove to Huddersfield for the last date of the tour with Luke Leighfield. We played a private party. This was a bit scary as we didn't really know what to expect, but it turned out okay in the end.

After our emotional goodbye we drove back to the North Wales HQ for a couple of days. Our first day off was filled by a trip to Liverpool, and the second was spent having a fun day out at the beach. Most of the day was spent by playing Croquet and having long-jump competitions.

After our two days off we went to play at Telford's Warehouse in Chester. Unfortunately we don't have any pictures of this one because it turned out to be a goodbye gig for Kathryn, who decided to leave the band after the tour to concentrate on her uni work. This was a bit of a shock but we'd like to thank her for all the fun and adventures we've shared together. There's always room at the T&S table though so maybe she'll come and play with us again someday. Hope so.

The next day we drove to Northampton to play at The Labour Club with My First Tooth. It was almost a year since our last gig there, where we met My First Tooth for the first time. This turned out to be one of the highlights of the tour. The crowd were super and we got our third-ever encore! Yeah!

Then came the final date of the tour. We drove in convoy with My First Tooth to the Herne Bay Festival in Kent.

Before we played we decided to have a quick round of mini-golf! Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to finish our game, but it was fun nonetheless.

After our set we had the customary seaside fish and chips before throwing some stones out to the sea.

It was then time to set off back home. But not before one last photo!

We drove through the night (and through the rain) back home. It was the end of another super fun and super successful tour.

We would just like to thank everyone who came to see us, everyone who put us on, everyone who gave us a bed/floor for the night, and all of the bands we played with (especially Luke, Klaus and My First Tooth).

We're hoping to do another tour in October/ November time to coincide with the release of our next EP. Keep your eyes peeled!
